¡Ya reiniciamos! Luego de varias semanas de cierre de muchos establecimientos, ya tuvimos unas 30 niñas de ballet en nuestra “Tarde de Princesas”. Les enseñamos la importancia de construir sus vidas sobre un fundamento firme, con base en Lucas 6. Luego, el Sábado en la mañana, justo antes de la clase de ballet, Jiliani les habló sobre el Espíritu Santo y oramos por ellas. Sentimos el mover del Espíritu en sus corazones y vidas. Por favor mantengan a estas preciosas niñas en sus oraciones para que crezcan en el Señor. Muchas de ellas provienen de situaciones familiares muy difíciles.

También nos hemos reintegrado al grupo de alabanza de la iglesia presbiteriana local, además de la predicación y enseñanza, ahora que las iglesias han reabierto sus puertas para actividades presenciales. Zoom y Google Meet han sido grandes herramientas para que Roberto enseñe cursos bíblicos, como el de Génesis, recién iniciado, con alumnos desde Costa Rica, Honduras, y pronto desde EE.UU. y México. Esperamos empezar un estudio en portugués para brasileiros en pocas semanas.

Nuestra reciente visita a nuestros amigos Philip y Rita en la ciudad de Caruarú, unas 5 horas al sur de nosotros, durante un fin de semana, fue un maravilloso tiempo de bendición. Fue muy bueno poder ver el ministerio que han construido durante los últimos 25 años, además de poder participar en la predicación, la enseñanza y la alabanza. Roberto predicó tres veces y dio un estudio para varones, mientras que Roxana enseñó la Palabra en el estudio de mujeres. Roberto incluso tradujo un canto del español al portugués para luego enseñarlo a ellos. Nos extendieron la invitación para regresar en cualquier momento y predicar, enseñar y dirigir alabanza con ellos.

De camino a casa, pasamos a visitar la base de JUCUM y a nuestros amigos allí, quienes dirigen dicho centro. Pudimos ver su nueva cafetería recién inaugurada, donde esperamos que nuestra hija Julianna pueda apoyarlos como voluntaria. Por favor oren por todos los arreglos y trámites necesarios para que nuestra hija nos pueda acompañar en Brasil, esperamos que en setiembre de este año.

Dios respondió a nuestras oraciones en cuanto a la propiedad para la escuela. ¡Ya pertenece a nuestra nueva asociación! Oremos por dirección de Dios en cuanto a su desarrollo. Continúen orando por nuestros documentos de residencia en Brasil. También oren por Ted y Patty, ya que su boda se tuvo que posponer, debido al cierre de oficinas consulares por la pandemia. Patty probablemente no podrá obtener su entrevista final aquí en Brasil por varios meses más, ya que hay muchas entrevistas pendientes acumuladas. Sabemos que Dios tiene el control de todo. ¡Sea su nombre exaltado por siempre!

We are back at it! We had about 30 ballet girls at our “Afternoon For Princesses” where we taught them about the importance of building their lives on a firm foundation from Luke 6. Then on Saturday morning before their actual ballet class, Jiliani talked to them about the Holy Spirit and we prayed over them. We could sense His moving in their hearts and lives. Please keep these precious girls in your prayers that they will grow in the Lord. Many of them come from dysfunctional families.

We are also back to leading worship and participating in the local Presbyterian church through preaching and teaching now that everything has reopened. Zoom and Google Meet have been great tools for Robert to teach Bible studies on the book of Genesis with people from Costa Rica and Honduras. We hope to start one in Portuguese in the near future.

Visiting our friends Phil and Rita in Caruaru for a weekend brought a wonderful time of blessing. It was great to see the ministry they have built over more than 25 years and to participate by preaching, teaching, and singing in worship. Robert preached three times, taught a men’s Bible study and Roxanne taught a women’s Bible study. Robert even translated a song from Spanish to Portuguese to sing for them. We have a standing invitation to return to preach, teach, and lead worship with them.

On the drive home, we swung in to visit the YWAM base and our friends there. We were able to see the new coffee shop they have started where we hope our daughter Julianna can participate as a volunteer. Please pray for everything to fall into place for Julianna to join us in Brazil, hopefully in September of this year.

God answered prayers concerning the property for the school. It now belongs to our association! Pray for God’s guidance in its development. Continue to pray for the acceptance of the Association by the government and for our residency papers. Pray too for Ted and Patty as their wedding has had to be postponed because of offices being closed due to the pandemic. Patty will probably not be able to get the final interview here in Brazil for several months yet as there is a huge backlog. As you can imagine, this has thrown a monkey wrench in their plans, but we know the Lord is in control. May He be forever praised!

   Despite the lockdown, we have managed to create a board for our new non-profit, ATV (Associação Transformando Vidas – Transforming Lives Association). Over the last couple of weeks, we (Ted, Patricia, Robert, and Roxanne) have met with each of the candidates for our board and all of them have said yes! We also made the decision to leave the current school as is, and build the middle and high school on the new property we’re in the process of purchasing under the new association. The children from the existing Mãos Unidos school (United Hands) will graduate from grade five (the end of their elementary school cycle) and move to the new school for middle school (sixth through ninth grades) and then high school (tenth through twelfth grades). The new property (we trust the paperwork will be completely finalized this month!) has a house on it, which we can adapt to be used for our upcoming sixth-grade class next year, while the middle school facility is being built.

   Roxanne has been asked to be the Director of the new school. We interviewed Fatima about the possibility of being Assistant Director and she readily accepted. With tears in her eyes, Fatima explained that she has been buying lottery tickets over the last couple of years (her sister won the lottery a few years back!) with the hopes that a jackpot win would allow her to build a school like the one we described to her. Fatima is a math teacher, she served as Secretary of Education here in Vera Cruz for several years and is about to graduate from teacher’s college at the age of sixty. She has heard in her teacher’s college classes of a system where the students have an extended day at school to include other topics like music, gym, and art, but has never seen such a school! That which so many take for granted in North America would be her dream come true in the rural Northeast of Brazil!

The Lord just gave us two precious additions to our family. Three-month-old kittens, Copper and Daisy, are brother and sister. Their mother was a pregnant Siamese rescued from the street. Though obviously mixed, they have some Siamese traits, the blue eyes and darkened tips. They live up to the term “Scaredy Cats,” as they only allow the two of us to get close to them! They curl up at the foot of our bed each night and they wake us up each morning by nipping at our moving toes and chasing each other over our sleeping bodies! It is surely a sweeter wake-up call than our noisy neighbour blaring his music!

   Aunque hemos estado encerrados todo el mes de marzo aquí en Brasil, ¡el Señor Jesús no se mantuvo encerrado el domingo de resurrección! ¡Alabamos a Dios por su perdón y vida eterna por medio de Cristo, nuestro Señor!

   Ninguno de los estudios bíblicos que habíamos planeado iniciar en marzo ocurrieron debido a las restricciones del gobierno. Sin embargo, un día conocimos a unos nuevos vecinos mientras caminábamos por el barrio. Desde ese día, hemos regresado a su casa a disfrutar un café con Jair y Liliani, sentados en sillas plásticas frente a su casa  sobre la calle de tierra. La hermana de Liliani, Katiana, y su esposo, Carlos, nos acompañaron otro día. Decidimos disfrutar de una cena de Viernes Santo juntos y pudimos compartir un vídeo sobre la muerte de Cristo en la cruz. Hablamos acerca del perdón de pecados y la vida eterna disponible para nosotros por medio de Él. El domingo de resurrección regresamos a tomar café y tuvimos una excelente plática de la Biblia con ellos. Ellos quieren empezar un estudio bíblico con nosotros y van a invitar a Katiana, Carlos y otros parientes. Por favor oren por nuestra continua relación con estos nuevos amigos; que sus corazones sean movidos al arrepentimiento y la sumisión a Cristo, conforme estudiamos las Escrituras juntos.

   Seguimos desarrollando relaciones con otros vecinos también, como Rodrigo y Cristiane, que viven al frente de nuestra casa. Recientemente tuvimos una emocionante reunión con su cuñado, Tiago, quien es ingeniero agrónomo, cuando vino a visitar parientes en nuestra ciudad. Amablemente se ofreció para ayudarnos con nuestro futuro proyecto de irrigación. Él quiere proveer asistencia técnica gratuita para los pequeños agricultores en cuanto a los cultivos más rentables y las mejores opciones de irrigación, con base en el volumen de agua disponible.

   Dios proveyó una abogada de inmigración en la cercana ciudad de Natal, y ya logramos someter la documentación para nuestra residencia. Estamos agradecidos que nuestra estadía en el país ha sido prorrogada hasta agosto. Oremos para que, a pesar de las restricciones y cierres, nuestra residencia esté lista antes de esa fecha.

   También hemos hallado una propiedad grande donde se podría construir la escuela. Si esta es propiedad que Dios tiene para la escuela, oremos por los fondos necesarios para adquirirla. Actualmente, la escuela funciona en las aulas de Escuela Dominical de la Iglesia Presbiteriana del pueblo. Sin embargo, para el año entrante no habrá suficiente espacio, y no existe otro edificio en este pueblo que pueda albergar la escuela. Cada año calendario se añade otro grado académico. Este año añadieron el quinto grado en doble horario cada día, para poder acomodar a todos los niños en las tres aulas disponibles. Si quisiera contribuir para la compra de la propiedad y la construcción de la única escuela cristiana en todo este distrito de varios pueblos, ¡por favor contáctenos! Esperamos publicar más detalles sobre este emocionante proyecto en las próximas semanas, junto con una propuesta de recaudación de fondos.

   Though we have been on lockdown all month here in Brazil, the Lord Jesus didn’t stay locked in on resurrection Sunday! We praise God for forgiveness and eternal life through Christ, our Lord!

   None of the Bible studies we had planned to initiate happened in the month of March because of the lockdown. We did, however, meet some new neighbours one day, as we went for a walk. Since that day, we have gone back to enjoy coffee time with Jair and Liliani, sitting out on the dirt road on plastic chairs in front of their house. Liliani’s sister, Katiana, and her husband, Carlos, joined us another day. We all decided to enjoy Good Friday dinner together and we were able to share a video about Christ’s death on the cross. We talked about the forgiveness of sin and eternal life available to us through Him. On Easter Sunday, we returned to have coffee and had a great discussion about the Bible with them. They want to start a Bible study with us and are going to invite Katiana, Carlos, and other relatives. Please pray for our continued relationship with these new friends; that their hearts would be moved to repentance and submission to Christ, as we study the Scriptures together.

   We continue to develop relationships with other neighbours, as well, like Rodrigo and Cristiani, right across the street from our place. We recently had an exciting meeting with their brother-in-law, Tiago, who is an agronomist, while he was visiting his relatives in our city. He eagerly volunteered to help us with our irrigation project. He wants to offer free technical assistance to the farmers regarding the best crops and irrigation strategies, based on the volume of water available.

   God provided an immigration lawyer in the nearby city of Natal, and we were able to submit our paperwork to her. We are thankful that our residence visa is now being processed, which means our allowance to stay in the country has been extended until August. Pray that, despite the lockdown, our residency will come through before that time.

   We have also found a great property for the possible school construction. If this is the location God has for the school, pray for the necessary funds to purchase it. Currently, the school is using the Sunday School classrooms of the local Presbyterian church. However, by next year there won’t be sufficient space, and there isn’t another place in this town to house the school. Each calendar year another academic grade is added. They are up to grade five now, teaching in two shifts, morning and afternoon, in order to accommodate the kids in the three available classrooms. If you would like to contribute to the purchase of this property and the construction of the only Christian school in this whole municipality of several towns, please contact us! We hope to publish more details about this exciting development project in the next few weeks, along with a fundraising proposal.

La Gaceta Grego - Marzo 2021

   Regresamos a Brasil de nuestro breve viaje a Costa Rica y de inmediato le entramos de lleno al trabajo. Como nuestro patrocinador estaba en Brasil en esos días, tuvimos un desfile de reuniones durante varios días, en las que Roberto estuvo traduciendo. Una de esa reuniones fue con un abogado, con el fin de establecer una nueva asociación como la figura legal que servirá de amparo para varios ministerios, que con la ayuda de Dios servirán para impactar a muchas vidas en esta región. Roberto asumirá la función de Director de un nuevo ministerio de desarrollo comunitario, el cual proveerá sistemas de irrigación para agricultores de bajos recursos en esta área rural y seca del país. Cada agricultor se comprometerá a retribuir la bendición a la asociación mediante el diezmo de su aumentada producción agrícola, para el programa de asistencia social a las familias más necesitadas de sus pueblos. 

   En la foto aparece Cícero, quien estará trabajando a tiempo completo para identificar los beneficiarios idóneos, supervisar la instalación de los sistemas de irrigación y dar seguimiento a las alianzas con estos agricultores. Roberto se reunirá con Cícero y los agricultores en forma regular para constatar su progreso, además de estudiar la Biblia con ellos. Oren por sabiduría para Roberto y Cícero conforme construyen amistades con estos campesinos y proveen diversos tipos de apoyo para sus familias. Oren también por la toda la documentación necesaria para que la asociación sea inscrita lo antes posible.

   Otro ministerio de esta nueva asociación tiene que ver con la escuela primaria cristiana. Estamos buscando un predio para la nueva construcción, ya que se nos hizo pequeña el área de Escuela Dominical de la iglesia local. Oren por una ubicación idónea y la sabiduría para su diseño y construcción, al igual que una transición fluida y tranquila de la realidad actual. Jiliani es la directora de esta escuela, donde Roxana estará ayudándoles a establecer una biblioteca, y donde estaremos clases de inglés para las maestras y la comunidad en general.

   Roberto estará iniciando un estudio bíblico para hombres en nuestra casa en marzo, junto con Gleidson, el pastor brasileño de la iglesia donde actualmente estamos sirviendo. Oren por los hombres que asistirán los lunes en la noche, que Dios prepare sus corazones, y por Roberto y Gleidson, conforme los desafían y animan en el Señor.

   El ministerio de ballet comenzará de nuevo en marzo. Además de orar por el crecimiento espiritual de las niñas, recuerden a sus madres en oración. Jiliani y Roxana planean abordar a estas madres con el evangelio en marzo y empezar a discipular a aquellas que entreguen su corazón a Cristo.

   A nivel personal, pedimos sus oraciones por nuestro hijo, David, quien está separado de su esposa y extraña muchísimo a sus niñas. Que el Señor lo fortalezca y lo atraiga de vuelta a sus caminos. Por favor oren por nuestra hija, Julianna, quien desea venir a vivir aquí en Brasil con nosotros, una vez que venza su contrato de alquiler y termine de pagar su deuda de estudios. Necesitaríamos conseguirle una visa de estudiante o laboral aquí, además que aún necesitamos obtener nuestra propia residencia. Oren por dirección en cuanto a los trámites necesarios. Por último, agradecemos al Señor por nuestros treinta años de matrimonio, que celebraremos el 9 de marzo aquí en Brasil. Que nuestro Señor continúe fortaleciéndonos y uniéndonos mientras le servimos juntos en esta gran nación.

   También expresamos nuestra gratitud a Dios por el equipo de liderazgo local con el cual trabajo acá, y por ustedes y nuestro maravilloso equipo de guerreros de oración en Norteamérica. Que el Omnipotente continúe usando a este equipo multicultural para glorificarlo, mientras él extiende y cultiva su Reino aquí el el nordeste de Brasil. ¡Venga tu Reino!

The Grego Gazette - March 2021

   We hit the ground running in Brazil upon returning from our brief trip to Costa Rica. Since our sponsor (Ted Kerr) was in Brazil at the time, we had a stream of meetings for several days, with Robert translating. One such meeting was with a lawyer, in order to set up a new association as a legal umbrella for several new ministries, which we trust God will use to impact many lives in this region. Robert will be serving as director of a Community Development ministry, which will provide irrigation systems to low-end farmers of this large, arid region. Each farmer will commit to blessing back the association with a tithe of their multiplied produce for the ongoing care programs of the neediest families in their towns. Below is a picture of our meeting with Cicero, who will be working full time to identify qualified candidates, oversee the installation of the irrigation systems, and follow up on their partnership. Robert will meet with Cicero and the farmers on a regular basis to assess their progress, as well as study the Bible with them. Pray for wisdom for Robert and Cicero as they build relationships with these farmers and provide various types of support to their families. Pray also for guidance in all the necessary paperwork for the association to be set up as quickly as possible.

   Another branch of the said association has to do with the Christian elementary school. We are looking for a property to build on, as we have outgrown the small Sunday School area of a local church. Pray for the ideal location and wisdom in the design and construction of the school, as well as a smooth transition from its current location. Jiliani is the director of the school, where Roxanne will be helping them set up a library, and where we will provide English lessons for the teachers and the community.

   Robert will be starting a men’s Bible study group in March in our home, together with Gleidson, the Brazilian pastor/missionary of the church where we are currently serving. Pray for the men who will be attending Monday nights, that God would prepare their hearts, and for Robert and Gleidson, as they challenge and encourage them.

   The ballet ministry will start up again in March. Besides praying for the girls’ spiritual growth, remember their mothers in prayer. Jiliani and Roxanne plan on reaching out to their mothers in March and to disciple those who make decisions for Christ.

   On a personal note, we ask for prayer for our son, David, who is now separated from his wife and misses his girls terribly. May the Lord strengthen him and draw him closer to Himself. Please pray for our daughter, Julianna, who desires to come live with us here in Brazil, once her lease runs out and she pays off her school debt. Not only would we need to get her a student or work visa here, but we also need to get our own residency. Pray for guidance in all the necessary documentation. Finally, we thank our Lord for thirty years of marriage, which we will be celebrating on March 9^th here in Brazil. May the Lord continue to strengthen and bond us as we serve him together in this great nation.

   We are so grateful to God for the local leadership team we work with here in Brazil, and for you and our wonderful team of prayer warriors up North. May the Lord continue to use this multicultural team to bring Him glory, as He expands and cultivates His Kingdom here in Northeast Brazil. Thy Kingdom come!
