Navidad, 2020

¡Qué Navidad tan diferente! ¡Muchos perdieron familiares o sus empleos por causa de la pandemia! En nuestro caso, fue el estar tan lejos de la familia. Pasamos la Navidad solos pero pudimos conectarnos con nuestros seres queridos por vídeo llamada. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos por la tecnología!

Tuvimos la cena de Navidad con nuestro vecino, Rodrigo, quien nos invitó a pasarla con sus primos en su finca, pudiendo hacer nuevas amistades con los brasileños. Esperamos ver de nuevo a varios de ellos pronto y atraerlos hacia el Reino.

Hace una semana tuvimos el programa de Navidad para las niñas del ballet. Vieron un corto vídeo sobre el Nacimiento. Hablamos sobre qué regalo le daríamos al Rey, y les enseñamos una canción que expresa la necesidad de darle su corazón al Rey. Algunas niñas oraron para recibir a Cristo. Luego todas recibieron sus regalos: un estuche con jabón y perfume, y un delicioso Panetone.

 

Intercedamos por el crecimiento espiritual de las niñas del ballet. Planeamos tener estudios bíblicos semanales con ellas al iniciar el nuevo año, además de procurar un acercamiento con sus familiares inconversos. También esperamos iniciar un estudio bíblico con Rodrigo, su esposa y algunos otros miembros de su familia.

Otra buena noticia reciente es que condujimos a Marcia, la señora que nos ayuda en la casa, a los pies de Cristo. Ahora, cada semana, cuando ella viene a hacer la limpieza, hacemos un pequeño estudio bíblico con ella al final de su jornada laboral. Por favor oren por su crecimiento espiritual.

Damos gracias a Dios por vivir cerca de Natal, una bella ciudad moderna, donde tiene su consultorio uno de los mejores neurocirujanos de Brasil. Este próximo 4 de enero, 2021, Roxanne por fin tendrá su muy esperada cirugía de columna para eliminar el dolor causado por un disco lumbar herniado, una dolencia de más de doce años. Por favor oren por un éxito rotundo en esta cirugía. Ella está ansiosa por entrarle de lleno al ministerio cuando ya no tenga más este impedimento de salud.

¡Que nuestro Rey de Reyes les conceda a sus familias mucho gozo y paz a lo largo de este Año Nuevo de 2021! ¡Que su dirección les lleve a una mayor profundidad en Su Palabra y Su Presencia!

Christmas, 2020

Dear Family and Friends,

This is a very different Christmas for so many because of the pandemic. In our case, it is mainly because we are so far away from family. We are spending Christmas alone but are able to connect with our loved ones via Zoom or Facebook video chat. We are very thankful for technology!

We spent Christmas Eve having dinner with a neighbour, Rodrigo, and his extended family, just developing new relationships with Brazilians here. We look forward to seeing several of them again soon so we can love them into the Kingdom.

Last week, we held a Christmas program for the ballet girls, showing them a short film about the birth of Christ. We talked about what gift they could give to the King and taught them a song expressing the need to give their hearts to Him. A few new girls prayed to receive Christ into their hearts. Then they all received gifts of sweet-smelling soaps and perfume and delicious Panetone bread.

The decoration we spent hours preparing with Jiliani and Pathy, doubled up for the ballet girls’ program and the Sunday church service. We led worship with Jiliani as usual on Sunday and did a special Christmas song with Pathy, which Robert translated into Portuguese.

Please continue to pray for the ballet girls and their spiritual growth. We plan on having Bible studies weekly with them starting in the new year instead of bi-weekly, and want to reach out to their families as well. We also hope to start a weekly Bible study with Rodrigo, his wife, and some of his extended family. 

Another recent highlight was leading our cleaning lady, Marcia, to Christ. Every week now, when she comes to clean our house and cook for us, we have a Bible study with her at the end of the afternoon. Please pray for her spiritual growth.

We are thankful to live close to Natal, a beautiful modern city, where one of the top neurosurgeons in Brazil has his practice. On January 4, 2021, Roxanne will have her long-awaited spine surgery to eliminate the pain caused by a herniated disc for more than a dozen years. Please pray that all will go smoothly. She looks forward to being able to throw herself fully into the ministry without this hindrance.

May the King of Kings grant you and your family much joy and peace through the New Year of 2021. May He lead and guide you deeper into His Word and Holy Presence. Merry Christmas!

La Gaceta Grego - Diciembre 2020

   “No sabemos leer,” dijo Pedro, el dueño de un puesto de frutas. Le habíamos ofrecido darle a él y a su esposa una Biblia cuando dijeron que querían conocer más. Ahora estamos buscando una Biblia en audio que podamos darles en una memoria USB para que puedan escuchar la Palabra de Dios. Esperamos poder empezar un estudio bíblico con ellos.

   Mientras continuamos nuestra caminata matutina, nos detuvimos frente a una tiendita, donde pasamos dejando a Rayres la otra noche, luego de la actividad bíblica con las niñas del grupo de ballet. Su madre nos contó alegremente cuán emocionada estaba su hija por el programa y lo agradecida que estaba con nosotros. Rayres cuenta los días para que llegue la siguiente clase bíblica de seguimiento. La semana pasada les hablamos de la importancia de leer las Escrituras para crecer en Cristo. Cada niña recibió un Biblia en lenguaje actual como regalo.

   Por favor oren por la dirección de Dios al continuar haciendo la obra de evangelización en este pueblo, que Dios nos guíe hacia aquellos que están sedientos como Cornelio. Oren también por el crecimiento espiritual de las niñas del ballet y por sus familias inconversas.

   

   Trabajamos a diario en la adquisición del idioma. Hemos sido lanzamos al ministerio desde el primer momento, enseñando a las chicas del ballet y conversando con los vecinos. ¡En la tercer semana acá, Roberto predicó su primer sermón en portugués! Y hemos estado ayudando con la alabanza los domingos, aprendiendo nuevos cantos en portugués cada semana! Estamos tan agradecidos por las oportunidades de servir en la obra. Por favor oren por nuestro progreso con el idioma.

     

Recientemente hicimos un viaje en carro a Recife (unas 4 horas al sur) para visitar la base de JUCUM (Juventud Con Una Misión) allí. Julie y Mati Gali dirigen esta base desde hace muchos años. Julie es oriunda de Sarnia, Ontario, Canadá, asistió a la misma escuela secundaria que Roxanne, y recibió apoyo de los padres de Roxanne por años. ¡Fue muy bonito poder finalmente estar en su casa y ver sus diversos ministerios luego de tantos años de solo leer sus cartas de oración! 

Estamos muy agradecidos con Patricia (Pathy), quien comparte casa con nosotros y ha sido un gran bendición, orientándonos, traduciendo y explicándonos muchas cosas. Ella nos acompañó a Recife y, de regreso a casa, al pueblo colonial Olinda, uno de los asentamientos más antiguos de Brasil.

Mientras nosotros disfrutamos de enormes bendiciones aquí en Brasil, nuestros hijos han estado pasando tiempos difíciles. David y Ashley están separados y ha sido muy duro para ellos. Por favor oren especialmente por sus hijitas, pues extrañan a su papito. Oren por sanidad en el corazón de David y Ashley y que esta crisis los lleve a acercarse de nuevo a Jesús. Por su parte, Julianna está muy insatisfecha con su primer semestre en la universidad. Oren por sabiduría mientras elige otra carrera.

   Estamos tan agradecidos por sus fieles oraciones, que nos sustentan. ¡Dios es bueno!

   “We don’t know how to read,” said Pedro, a local fruit stand owner. We had offered to give him and his wife a Bible when they said they wanted to know more. So, now we’re looking into getting them an audio Bible on a USB stick that they can listen to and hope to start a homegroup with them.

   As we continued on our morning walk, we stopped at the corner store, where we had dropped off Rayres the other night after our outreach to the ballet students. Her mother was thrilled to tell us how excited her daughter was about the program and how thankful she is that we are here. Rayres counts the days to the next follow-up Bible class. This week we talked about the importance of reading the Scriptures in order to grow in Christ. Each girl received a contemporary Portuguese Bible as a gift.

   Please pray for God’s continued guidance as we reach out to evangelize the townsfolk and that God will lead us to those who are open to the Gospel like Cornelius. Pray, too, for the ballet girls to grow in Christ, and for their unsaved families.

   We work daily on our language acquisition. We have been thrust into ministry from the very start, teaching the ballet girls and talking to the neighbors. On week three of our time here, Robert preached his first sermon in Portuguese! And we have been helping with worship on Sundays, and learning new songs in Portuguese every week! We are so thankful for the opportunities to minister. Please pray for our continued language learning.

 We recently made a trip down to Recife (4-hour drive South) to visit the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) base there. Julie and Mati Gali run the base and have been there for years. Julie is originally from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, went to the same high school as Roxanne did, and was supported for years by Roxanne’s parents. It was neat to see their diverse ministries and home after so many years of only reading their prayer letters! 

   We are thankful for Patricia (Pathy), who lives with us and has been a blessing in orienting us. She accompanied us to Recife and, on the way home, to the colonial town of Olinda, one of the oldest settlements in Brazil.

   While we’re enjoying immense blessings here in Brazil, our children have been going through rough times. David and Ashley are separated and it has been very difficult. Please pray especially for the girls, as they miss their daddy. Pray for healing in David and Ashley’s hearts and that this will cause them to draw closer to Jesus. Meanwhile, Julianna has not been enjoying her first semester at college at all. Pray for wisdom as she chooses another career to follow.

   We are so grateful for your prayers, which sustain us. God is good!

La Gaceta Grego - Noviembre, 2020

     El síndrome del nido vacío te abre nuevas posibilidades. Juliana empezó la universidad el mes pasado, luego de tomar un año para trabajar tiempo completo. Está estudiando para ser asistente administrativa en London, Ontario, Canada. David y Ashley tuvieron su cuarta hija, Bobbie Elisa Mae, en abril. Ellos viven en St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Por lo tanto, estamos en una nueva etapa de nuestras vidas, solos como pareja una vez más.

     En abril de este año, cuando Roxanne perdió su empleo de bibliotecaria, debido al cierre de escuelas en Costa Rica por la pandemia mundial, le pedimos a Dios que nos abriera las puertas para regresar al campo misionero. Esa misma semana, nuestro amigo de muchos años y antiguo socio financiero, Ted Kerr, nos llamó y nos contó sobre un ministerio en el Noreste de Brasil, con el cual él ha estado involucrado durante bastante tiempo. Hemos sido invitados a unirnos al equipo ministerial allí, con todos nuestros gastos básicos de vivienda cubiertos.

     Vera Cruz es un pueblo rural pequeño a una hora tierra adentro de la ciudad costera de Natal, en el sector noreste de Brasil. Mãos Unidas es un ministerio que inició con una escuelita cristiana que Ted ha estado apoyando financieramente por varios años. Inició como una institución preescolar, pero recientemente empezaron a añadir un nivel cada año. Estarán agregando el quinto grado al comenzar el nuevo año lectivo en febrero de 2021. Para lograr la acreditación por parte del gobierno de Brasil ellos requieren aumentar sus servicios, incluyendo una biblioteca. Roxanne les ayudará a crearla, además de mejorar su programa de inglés. Mãos Unidas está adquiriendo un terreno amplio para construir la escuela secundaria y Roxanne podrá dar sugerencias sobre el diseño y los materiales requeridos.

     Contiguo a la escuelita primaria, Gleidson Soares pastorea una pequeña congregación presbiteriana. Su esposa, Jiliani, es la directora de la escuela. Aparte de ser padres de dos niñas, ambos trabajan a tiempo completo fuera de la iglesia. Las noches y fines de semana son las únicas ocasiones que tienen para atender su familia y la congregación. Estaremos apoyando al pastor Gleidson en evangelismo, discipulado y capacitación de líderes.

     No existe una asociación de pastores en esta área. Los pastores de estas iglesitas rurales, carentes de liderazgo sólido, trabajan básicamente como “llaneros solitarios”. Nuestra meta es desarrollar amistades con estos pastores y sus esposas y establecer una asociación pastoral, con el fin de brindar aliento y apoyo a estos hombres y mujeres de Dios. Una vez que nos ganemos su confianza, podremos apoyarlos con enseñanza y capacitaciones diversas.

     En los próximos dos años, cuando se haya construido el Centro de Capacitación Misionera, estaremos ayudando a capacitar a jóvenes brasileños para el servicio misionero. Por ahora vivimos en el hospedaje para futuros estudiantes, que es lo único construido hasta ahora. Lo siguiente que se construirá en la propiedad será nuestra casa permanente. La tercera etapa será levantar un edificio de aulas.

     En setiembre estuvimos en Canadá visitando a nuestros hijos y nietas. Al regresar a Costa Rica nos encargamos de vender nuestras cosas, trámites bancarios, vacunas, etc. Volamos a Brasil el 27 de octubre, llegando a nuestro destino final el 28. Con solo un día de estar acá, Roberto puso a prueba su aprendizaje del portugués, ya que tuvo que traducir en las reuniones  entre Ted y los líderes locales. Tres días después le ayudó a Jiliani en la alabanza del culto dominical, tocando guitarra. El miércoles siguiente le ayudamos a Jiliani a planear y preparar materiales de un evento evangelístico que tendríamos el viernes para sus alumnas de ballet. Fue un gran éxito, ya que las 20 chicas oraron para recibir a Jesús en sus corazones.

1. Gracia y favor con la gente de  Vera Cruz, nuestro nuevo hogar.
2. La ayuda de Dios para aprender el idioma pronto.
3. Sabiduría y gracia para conseguir nuestra residencia permanente.
4. El programa de seguimiento con la 20 nuevas jóvenes creyentes.

The Grego Gazette - November 2020

     Becoming empty nesters opens up new possibilities. Julianna started college last month after taking a year off to work full time. She’s studying to be an office assistant through Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. David and Ashley had their fourth child, Bobbie Elisa Mae in April. They live in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. And so, we are in a new stage in our lives, as we are once again on our own.

In April, when Roxanne lost her job as a librarian due to the Covid19 shutdown of all schools in Costa Rica, we began to pray in earnest that God would open the doors for us to return to the mission field. Within the week, our long-time friend and former supporter, Ted Kerr, called us and shared about a ministry he has been involved with, in Northeastern Brazil for quite some time. We have been invited to join the team there, with all of our basic living expenses covered.

Vera Cruz is a little, rural town an hour inland from the coastal city of Natal in northeastern Brazil. Mãos Unidas (Joined Hands) is a small Christian school that Ted has been supporting financially for many years. It started out as a pre-school but recently began to add a grade each year. They will be finishing fourth grade in December and adding fifth as the new school year starts in February. In order to be accredited by the Brazilian government, the school needs an upgrade, and certain additional components, such as a library. Roxanne will help them create a library, as well as improve their English program. A large property is being purchased in order to build the middle and secondary school of Mãos Unidas and she will give input into the design and the equipment needed.

Next to the school, Gleidson Soares pastors a small Presbyterian church. His wife, Jiliani, is the director of the school. Besides being parents to two young children, they work full time outside of the church. Weekends and evenings are the only time they have to spend with family and tend to the church. We will be helping Pastor Gleidson in evangelism, discipleship, and leadership training.

There is no pastoral association in the area. Each pastor works pretty much as a “lone ranger”. We aim to develop relationships with the pastors and their wives in the area and establish a pastoral association, which will provide urgently needed support and encouragement for these men and women of God. We will make ourselves available to teach, preach, and train leaders as they become open to our participation.

Once the Missions Training Center is built, a couple of years down the road, we will be helping to train local Brazilians for missionary service. For now, we are living in the dorm building, which is the first part of the Center to have been built. Next to be constructed on the property is a house we will be able to call home. The third stage in the building project will be the classroom building.

We were recently in Canada visiting our children and grandchildren. Upon our return to Costa Rica, we were tying up loose ends and flew to Brazil on October 27^th, arriving on the 28^th. Within a day of our arrival, Robert was having to put his new language learning into practice as he translated for meetings between Ted and the local team. Sunday he played the guitar as Jiliani sang. Wednesday we helped Jiliani plan and prepare materials for an evangelistic event for her ballet students. It was held on Friday and was a great success. All 20 girls who attended prayed to receive Jesus in their hearts.

1. For grace and favor with the locals as we settle into Vera Cruz.
2. For God’s help to learn the language quickly.
3. For wisdom and grace in getting permanent residency.
4. For the follow-up program with the 20 young new believers.
